Description

This is just a short story I've been working on for a couple years after watching a special about pack animals. I left it alone about halfway through and finished it recently. Please leave comments.

“Edward, what are you staring at?” Luis called as he nudged me. I chuckled and shook my head, snapping back to reality. I looked over at Luis, wishing I had perfect white fur like his. He stared back with dark piercing eyes, even though his left eye had a black stain around it. I sighed, looking down at my mangy looking black paws, regretting my omega position even more.
“I was just admiring Anubis’ beauty,” I answered as I turned away from him, staring out across the desert landscape. I sighed as I sat down, pushing the sand with my paws. “Don’t bother reminding me that she’s the alpha… I remember.” I looked out to have Luis sit next to me.
“Its okay dude,” Luis replied. “I wish I could get with her too. But she’s the alpha, and you’re the omega.”
“I know dude!” I shouted as I stood up, almost growling at him. I sighed, shaking my head to calm down. “I can’t stand it though! We were friends when we were pups, now she won’t even look in my direction.” I sighed and began walking away. “I’m going to go… Maybe I’ll find my own place in the world.”
“Dude, don’t just leave!” Luis rushed up to me, stopping in front of me. I stared at him for him to stare back. “You’re my best friend; I don’t want you to leave.”
“I’m not going to stick by and watch Anubis parade around and pick another mate!” I sighed and sat down, looking back at the cave where Anubis was laughing with the others. “She’s so strong and beautiful… I can’t stay here and watch her end up with someone else.”
“If you’re going to go, take me with you. I can’t just leave my best friend.” I stared back at Luis and shook my head.
“I can’t let you come with me. I need to do this on my own.” I walked up to him and stared into his eyes. “I’m going to miss you my friend. But I’ll see you again.” Luis smiled back at me and patted my shoulder with his paw.
“I’ll see you around then; be careful out there.” I nodded and quickly sprinted out into the desert, leaving everyone I knew behind. I ran as far as I could eventually walking for a day and a half. Eating the little scraps I could find around the desert, barely keeping alive. After a while I reached a strange place, with large structures and metal beasts racing around. I stared at them, cautiously approaching the new mysterious place. As I got close, the ground began to change, turning from the normal soft sand to a faded grey flat rock. It was almost as if it was made from a bunch of small rocks glued together. The metal beasts were racing along these odd parts of land, running faster than I ever could. I continued into the middle of the structures, getting stares from the hairless apes. They seemed to back away as I walked by. It was a strange interesting place, even when a small female gave me a hug. The ape’s mother snatched the girl up, shouting in a foreign tongue.
I continued exploring this strange place until one of the hairless apes captured me in a metal box. I stared at the large man through the bars, glaring and growling, pushing against the box for my freedom. The ape laughed and put me on top of one of the large metal beasts I saw that race around. I sat down in my cage, knowing that I was trapped, and thinking about everything I left behind. I almost thought that I was going to be killed. The ape stepped into the mouth of the beast and it began racing down the road. I lay down on the cold metal floor of my cage, remembering my promise to Luis. As I my thoughts shifted to Anubis, the metal beast came to a stop. I stood up, watching as the man left into one of the odd structures. I sighed and sat back down, looking up at the vultures in the sky.
“Great,” I muttered. “Now they’re going to mock me…” I slumped back down, awaiting my fate. The man returned almost two hours later, getting back into the beast and driving off. I sat there, listening to the beast roar as it raced across the desert. There was a strange sound coming from the mouth of the beast, almost pleasant. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was the blues. I heard the man listening to Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Little Walter. I actually enjoyed the strange new music I was introduced to. While I only heard them once; my favorites were Smokestack Lightning, Hoochie Coochie Man, Juke, and My Babe. I was disappointed when the music stopped. The beast came to a halt in an area full of giant flying ones. The man came back to me, picking the cage up, saying something in his foreign tongue. He pulled out a needle and injected me with something. The pain was momentarily, but I blacked out afterwards.
I came to in a new area, full of towering green trees. I stood up and began to panic, not used to this type of surrounding. I sat down and took several deep breaths, trying to calm myself. I gazed up; trying to see the sun, but the treetops blocked almost all view of the sky; only letting the light pour through. I took a deep breath, smelling meat behind me. I turned around to find a large pile of meat there, just waiting for me. I rushed over to the meat, beginning to eat until my eyes caught sight of a beautiful white jackal. She walked up to me slowly, staring at me with deep blue eyes. I stared at her in awe, smiling at her. I looked down at the meal before me and gasped. “Um…” I choked. “Do you want some?” She giggled and walked around me, examining my mangy dark fur.
“You’re an omega,” she called in a soothing confident voice. I sighed and slumped down. “They expect me to mate with you?” I perked up at the thought of it, but then remembered Anubis. I shook my head and turned away, ashamed to look her in the eye.
“I may be an omega,” I began. “But I’m in love with another…” The female jackal quieted me as she tackled me, staring down at me seriously.
“Do you know where you are?” She barked. “Any idea what’s going on? Why you’re here?” I shook my head, staring back up in fear as she stared at her claws grinning. “You’re in a nature reserve somewhere in Ohio. You were brought here to make a fake population here, and they picked an omega to mate with me! Just stay away from me and I’ll leave you a decent share of food. And don’t bother trying to leave. There are electrified fences and hunters who will just bring you back.”
“Am I going to get a name from you?”
“Names are pretty but pointless. The people here call me Wepauwet after some Egyptian god.”
“Back home I was called Edward… At least by Luis I was.” I sighed and bean walking away, leaving Wepauwet with the rest of the meal. I was used to skipping meals and barely eating. Wepauwet stopped me by getting in my way. She stared at me, almost piercing into my soul.
“I know it’s hard leaving everything behind and coming to a strange place like this. It took me a while to get used to it too. Just take my advice and forget about your past.” I shook my head looking away.
“I can’t forget her…” I sighed as I began walking away. “My beautiful Anubis…”
“Was she your mate?” I shook my head and looked back at her.
“Anubis was my friend when we were younger… That changed a few years ago when she became the alpha. Now she wouldn’t even glance in my direction.” Wepauwet walked up next to me and sat down.
“So are you saying that I’m not good enough?”
“N-no! It’s just…” I sighed as I began walking away, thinking about how to escape. Wepauwet gasped as I walked by, completely ignoring her as I walked away. Wepauwet followed behind me as I walked up a hill to an opening, allowing me to gaze out at the vast expanse of forest. I looked back to find Wepauwet behind me. “Now you’re following me? I’m the omega.”
“I won’t be ignored.”
“Get used to it… That’s how I’ve been treated my entire life. It’s not like you’re going to help me.” I began running down the hill and into the forest, trying to explore. I found a nice hole in a tree that I would turn into my bunk. It was perfect, placed near a small pond and with a few birds in a nest above. As I began entering my new home, I noticed that Wepauwet was sneaking further behind me. I chuckled as I
curled up in my new bunk, getting ready to go to sleep. I perked up when I saw Wepauwet getting closer, showing her that I was paying attention. “Is the alpha going to take my new home now?”
“Why are you ignoring me?” Wepauwet walked up to me and stared into my eyes.
“If it’s so important to you. You’re the exact opposite of Anubis. She had perfect black fur while yours is white, she left me alone and when I leave you alone you pay attention. I had no chance with Anubis and I know I have no chance with you. So I’m just going to spend the rest of my days trying to get back to my friends.”
“You’re seriously going to leave here? Everything is provided for you. We get fed daily, there aren’t any reasons to hunt, and the humans leave us alone.” I shook my head, getting up and walking away.
“No matter what I do or where I go, two things will remain the same. I’ll always be an omega, and I’ll never get a partner of my own.” I walked over to the pond and began drinking from it.
“If you’re going to leave then leave… I’m not going to put up with this!” I glanced over as she left, returning to my hollow in the tree. I closed my eyes and began to drift to sleep. I awoke when I heard a thunderous crack, reminding me of the flash floods back home. The sky slowly began getting dark, and rain began pouring from the trees. I got up and walked out; looking for a sign of Wepauwet, hoping that she was okay. I rushed around, looking for her as the storm brewed up. I found her shivering under a tree, rushing up to her to see if she was alright.
“Are you okay?” Wepauwet stared at me and scoffed.
“I thought you were leaving.” Wepauwet turned away from me and began shivering again. “Why did you come back to me?”
“Because you’re out in a storm alone and… I was disobeying the number one rule of the pack. Never travel solo.”
“And yet you left your pack.” I sighed and nodded, turning away.
“I know… I’m just an outcast omega.” I turned back to Wepauwet and stared at her for a moment, watching her shake the water off her body. She looked so beautiful the way she dried off, almost making me forget about Anubis. I was snapped back to attention as lightning struck the tree we were under, causing one of the branches to fall off. “Look out!” I tackled Wepauwet, pushing her out of the way of the branch. Wepauwet stood up slowly, glaring down at me then over at the branch I saved her from.
“Why did you just do that?”
“I can’t let my alpha just die like that.”
“I thought you were an outcast omega.” I scoffed as I stood up, walking by Wepauwet.
“Just consider it an act of kindness. Now you can either come with me to my little hole, or you can stay out here in this storm.” I glanced back at Wepauwet who just stared back. I chuckled and began leading her back to my hole, smiling as she curled up inside it.
“Thank you.” I sighed and sat down outside, ignoring the rain soaking my fur. I almost flinched each time the lightning struck nearby, but remained outside. “You aren’t going to join me?” I stared back at Wepauwet who smiled back. “Well don’t just stand out in the rain.” Wepauwet pushed herself deeper in, making some room for me inside the hole. I sighed as I curled up next to her, shivering from the cold rain. Wepauwet wrapped her paws around me, holding me against her.
“W-what are you do-doing?”
“I’m keeping you warm.” I lay there, almost enjoying her warm embrace until the storm ended. When it was over Wepauwet pushed me out, shaking herself off. “Now let’s get you home.” I gasped and stared at her as she smiled back. “You need to get to your Anubis right?” I sighed and shook my head.
“Even if I get back, I’m still an omega.” Wepauwet walked over to me and stared into my eyes.
“I promise to help you get her. I’ll even say you’re my alpha when we get there.” I stared at her almost in disbelief from her help.
“Y-you’d really do that for me?” Wepauwet stared down for a moment thinking then nodded.
“You saved my life, so the least I can do is try to give you a chance with her.”
“But how are we going to get out of here? You said there’s a fence and hunters.”
“I’ll worry about that, just follow me.” I followed her through the forest until we came to a clearing with a wooden structure. Around it was a wide fence, stretching beyond where I could see. “That’s where the humans stay to take care of us. All you have to do is fake an injury and they’ll take you to a special place where they’ll take care of you. Our goal is to escape on the way there. Now come here.” Wepauwet led me to a berry bush, pushing me into it.
“What are you doing?”
“Just keep quiet and roll around. The berries will make your fur look like you’re covered in blood.” I nodded and rolled around in the bush like instructed. “Now this is up to you. You need to limp up to the door and pretend to pass out when the human answers. They’ll put you in a cage and load you in a truck.”
“I’ve been in a cage before, I can’t get out.”
“Not from the inside. That’s why I’ll sneak onto the truck and help you out. Then we need to find our way… East I believe.”
“We’ll figure it out when we’re free from this place.” I began limping up to the lodge, scratching on the door and whimpering. A female answered the door, staring down at me shocked. I fell over onto my side and pretended to be unconscious. She said some things before picking me up. I kept my eyes closed, listening as she put me in a cage. I opened my eyes and watched her leave the room, leaving me inside the cage. The lodge was pretty empty besides a few wooden furnishings and a fireplace. I lay back down, closing my eyes when I heard the woman returning. She picked up the cage and carried it for a bit, setting it down inside another one of the metal beasts. She got into its mouth and began driving.
The back of the truck had several tools and stuff lying around, probably to keep up maintenance of the fence. I looked around for Wepauwet to find no signs of her. I sighed and slumped down, realizing that she lied to me. I began thinking about Wepauwet, almost regretting taking her advice. After a few minutes of riding, I heard something chasing us. I looked back to see Wepauwet chasing after the truck, trying to jump in. The truck came to a stop, making Wepauwet run right into the bumper. “Ow!”
“Come on, you can do it!” Wepauwet growled as she leaped into the truck, ducking down as it began driving again. Wepauwet walked up to the cage, biting the clamp. The cage opened up, giving me my chance to get out. “I almost thought you weren’t coming.” Wepauwet giggled and nudged me.
“I promised I’d help you.” She gazed out the back, waiting for the right moment to jump. “Just stay next to me.” I nodded and stood by her side, leaping as the truck began getting on the freeway. She led me into a wooded area, sitting down under a thick tree. “Now we just need to find our way to Egypt.” I sighed as I looked up at the sky, feeling that we would never make it back home. “We’ll make it.” I looked over at Wepauwet who smiled back at me.
“You need to go to New York first,” a voice called from above us. We looked up to see a squirrel on a branch, staring down at us. “If you’re going to Egypt, you need to make it to New York to get transportation.”
“Transportation?” I asked confused.
“He means a boat or a plane,” Wepauwet answered.
“Where will we get one of those?” I cried.
“Relax,” the squirrel said as he climbed down to us. “I’ll tell the others to help you.”
“So we get a few squirrels helping us?” Wepauwet called.
“No no no!” the squirrel replied. “That’s every squirrel. They’ll help you. Just run in that direction, you’ll see another squirrel out there that’ll help you.” I looked off in the direction the squirrel pointed, dashing away in that direction.
“What are you doing?” Wepauwet cried as she chased after me.
“I’m going to New York!” I answered. I kept running off in the direction the squirrel pointed, Wepauwet chasing behind me. The thought of returning to Anubis and Luis was enough to keep me going. I ran for hours, having to slow down for Wepauwet. “Come on! I can feel that we’re close.”
“I hope you know that New York is about a week away,” Wepauwet panted, trying to regain her breath. “We’re not going to make it today.” I stopped and stared back at her, shocked and astounded by the news. I sat down, taking a moment to think about this.
“I’m really… How far are we?” I cried as I shook my head.
“You’re almost halfway around the world from your home,” Wepauwet answered as she starred back at me. I scoffed and shook my head. Wepauwet walked over to me, trying to comfort me as she leaned against me. “I promised to get you home. It’s not impossible.” I looked over at her as she smiled back.
“Are you sure we can make it?” Wepauwet smiled and nodded, walking by me as she examined the area.
“Of course we can make it. Now let’s go find something to eat.” I smiled, following her as she walked away. Wepauwet found a dead deer that we were able to eat. That night we continued walking towards New York, stopping in a plain opening to admire the half moon. “It’s beautiful isn’t it?” I nodded as I sat down, viewing the landscape around me.
“It’s hard to believe that I’m here and everyone I know is waking up, looking at the sun.” I chuckled and looked over at Wepauwet. “Thank you.” Wepauwet glanced back confused as I walked by. “You’re helping me do this to get the girl I love.” I stopped and sighed. “I just mean, you’re even going to say I was an alpha just to make her like me… No one’s ever offered anything like that for me. I’m used to being the omega stuck picking at bones and groveling at the alpha’s feet.”
“Groveling doesn’t sound bad.” I looked over at Wepauwet who giggled. She walked over, sitting next to me as we stared at the moon. I smiled over at Wepauwet, admiring the moonlight against her white fur.
“So do you still want me to grovel?”
“Let’s just find a place to sleep tonight.” Wepauwet smiled as she walked by me, searching for a place to stay for the night. She found a bush with enough space to curl under. I sighed, lying down outside the bush and staring up at the stars.
“Goodnight Wepauwet. Sleep well.”
“Are you always going to do this?”
“Do what?” I looked back at Wepauwet who smiled at me.
“Just come in here.” Wepauwet motioned for me to join her. I smiled as I crawled into the bush with her, curling up at her feet.
“Why do you want me with you?” Wepauwet curled up around me, resting her head on top of mine.
“You may be an omega. But since it’s just the two of us; that makes you my beta.” I perked up, looking up at Wepauwet. She smiled back at me, almost making me feel less like an omega and more like a pack member. I sighed contently, resting my head on Wepauwet’s paws. I took a deep breath to find that her paws had an addictive scent, so perfect that it almost aroused me. I tried to change my train of thought thinking that Wepauwet knew she made me feel better. I slowly drifted to sleep, thinking about how Wepauwet accepted me.
I awoke to find that Wepauwet was missing, searching nearby frantically for her. I looked around the woods and back around the field to no avail. I sighed and sat down, almost feeling betrayed again. “What are you sad about?” Wepauwet called from behind me. I looked back to find her approaching with a link of sausages. I smiled at her as she sat next to me, laying the sausages in front of me. “I brought these for you.” I stared back at her, surprised that she would share with me. I ate the sausages hastily, as if it was the only thing I’ve eaten in weeks. I smiled up at her afterwards, staring into her eyes as she smiled back. “Are you satisfied?”
“I’ve never eaten that well before,” I answered, sitting down. I looked down at my stomach and then sighed contently. “It feels good to be full.” Wepauwet giggled and sat next to me.
“Well until we get you with Anubis, you’re my beta,” Wepauwet said as she smiled at me.
“I like the sound of that,” I replied, looking off towards the east. “Are you ready to continue?” Wepauwet stared off for a moment before nodding. Wepauwet and I began walking east together. After almost another whole day of travel we came up to a squirrel who motioned for us.
“You's Wep-your-wets and Ed?” the squirrel asked.
“It’s Wepauwet,” Wepauwet answered.
“Whatever,” the squirrel called. “Follow me.” Wepauwet and I looked at each other, following the squirrel to an abandoned house. Inside there were dozens of squirrels and other animals about, using human stuff like a turntable set and radios to host a party. “You two are the most popular animals on the east side of the Rocky's. Everyone is going to help you get you on a plane to Egypt.”
“You guys would really do that?” I asked as we followed the squirrel to a back room, where a black wolf was waiting for us. Wepauwet and I stared at the wolf as he paced around us.
“Well this is certainly unexpected,” the wolf said as he stopped in front of us. “I didn’t expect you two to show up here, I am at a disadvantage. I am Donavon, wolf of the east. If you need something done, I’m the wolf for the job. Now sadly I cannot get you all the way to New York, but I can get you in the state. Now before you say anything, I insist that you stay here and relax for the night. You just need to do me a favor and take a message for me.”
“What’s the message,” Wepauwet asked.
“Hear me out first,” Donavon explained. “Tomorrow, a green truck is going to stop nearby with a large trailer behind it. You two get into the trailer and ride into New York. You need to get out of the truck at exit „152-A‟ and proceed east. When you get off the highway and into the nearby woods, look for the large willow tree. A sparrow will meet you there and you respond „Phillip‟. Do you understand?”
“We hitch a ride and get off at „152-A‟ going to the willow where we tell a bird „Phillip‟,” I repeated to confirm the instructions. Donavon nodded and began chuckling.
“Now go and enjoy yourselves,” Donavon said as he motioned for us to leave the room. “Request a song and get some milk on me.” Outside the room the party was going on; wolves, foxes, squirrels, dogs, even cats were here. Wepauwet and I glanced at each other before smiling. I walked up to the DJ looking at the assortment of human stuff he had in front of him.
“Got a song you want to request?” the DJ asked.
“Um…” I began, looking at the dance floor where the others were dancing. “Got anything good to dance to?”
“What you want?” the DJ called. “Romantic? Rave? Or just dance?”
“Romantic,” I answered.
“I’ll get something for you,” the DJ replied. “I’ll call you up to dance.” I chuckled as I began walking back through the room. One of the vixens was even eyeing me as I walked by. I just smiled and continued pushing my way through to Wepauwet. She was at the bar at the other end ordering some milk for us.
“I requested a song,” I said as I stopped next to her.
“That’s good, because I just got us two drinks,” Wepauwet answered as she pushed a small bowl of milk over to me. I lapped at the milk happily until the DJ got on the mike.
“Up next is Tango De Roxanne,” the DJ called. “A special song for Edward and Wepauwet the two jackals heading back to Egypt. Please come to the dance floor now.” I smiled at Wepauwet as I led her with me to the dance floor. The crowd made a circle around us as the music began playing.
“I don’t know how to dance,” Wepauwet whispered. I smiled back as I paced around her, making sure my feet hit the ground on beat.
“Neither do I,” I answered. “Just follow the beat of the music.” As the strings began to flourish, Wepauwet rushed up to me, circling me as she pushed her forehead against mine. I smiled as I backed up, standing on my hind legs as the man began singing. Wepauwet followed my example, standing up and placing her paws against mine. I smiled at her as we began pacing back and forth to the music, spinning her around a few times for a flourish. Everything just seemed to stop around us as we danced to the music. It was as if the world stopped, leaving the two of us in the middle of the room, dancing to the beautiful song behind us. I was almost certain Wepauwet felt similar, smiling at me the entire time. We snapped back to reality as the music stopped, returning to the standard rock of the party. I smiled at Wepauwet, scoffing as I walked out of the room.
I walked outside, staring up at the sky as the sun began setting. For once I actually felt like I should leave Anubis behind and stay with Wepauwet. I never felt as happy as I do with her, not to mention how something about her makes me forget that I’m an omega. I feel like a jackal when I’m with her, not an omega or a beta, just a jackal. “Something bothering you?” Donavon boomed from behind me. I chuckled and shook my head.
“Everything is bothering me,” I answered. “I’m an omega in a foreign country, trying to return home to my alpha.”
“If you don’t mind,” Donavon began. “Why return to an alpha when you have a perfect one right next to you?” I scoffed and shook my head.
“Wepauwet will never like me,” I replied.
“And the alpha in Egypt will?” Donavon asked. I looked over at him and chuckled.
“I don’t know. I… I just want to see Anubis again. I want to say goodbye to Luis and then… I don’t know.” I looked over at Donavon who stared up at the moon.
“When you get to Egypt, take a moment before you see your Anubis and decide. Even if Wepauwet is an alpha, that doesn’t hurt your chances of asking. Just think about it when you get there.” I chuckled and sighed, lying down on the cold grass. I listened as he went inside, sitting out there thinking about the others. I wonder if the others in Egypt even missed me.
“Are you alright?” Wepauwet asked as she sat next to me. “You left after our dance.” I smiled up at her and nodded.
“I’m fine,” I lied. “I’m just thinking.” I couldn’t tell her about my torn feelings. How I wanted Anubis and yet still wanted to be with her.
“We’ll be there in three days,” Wepauwet sighed as she lay next to me. “You must be excited about seeing Anubis again.”
“I…” I began. “I’m not…” I stood up and took a few steps forward, sighing and turning back to Wepauwet. “I don’t know… I.” I stared into her eyes, smiling at her for a moment before shaking my head. “I don’t know what to do anymore.”
“What’s wrong?” Wepauwet asked. She walked up to me, staring into my eyes, awaiting the truth.
“I…” I sighed and slumped down to the ground. “I’m worried that Anubis might be with someone else.”
“And if she is?”
“Well…” I stood up and stared at Wepauwet. “If she is, I’d like to stay with you. At least when I’m with you I don’t feel like an omega.” Wepauwet smiled as she nodded, staring up at the moon.
“That’s because you’re my beta.” I smiled over at her then down at the ground, thinking about Anubis. I began wondering about where Wepauwet is from. While I know a lot about her and what she likes, I have nothing about her past.
“How did you end up at the reserve?” Wepauwet chuckled and smiled back over at me.
“I was an alpha like my sister. All I remember is that my dad and my sister had pure black fur while mine was white. When I was young I was taken from my pack and brought to the reserve. I grew up there as the only jackal… I remember there was an omega from my pack that you remind me of. He would do everything to please my sister; like bringing her his share of food or making pictures in the ground.” I gasped realizing she was talking about me. “I don’t remember his name, but I wish someone would do that for me.” I chuckled and shook my head, realizing how foolish I was for not seeing it earlier.
“Do you remember your sister’s name?”
“Sadly I can’t remember much more beyond that.” I shook my head, deciding not to tell her that we’re doing this all so I can see her sister. “I think that’s why I don’t look at you like an omega. It was when I watched him, struggling to gain favor, that I realized omegas are more than just the weakest. I understood that he wanted something he could never have. It actually made me sad to watch it…” Wepauwet sighed and walked ahead of me. “That’s why I’m helping you. You’ll never be able to get her on your own.” I nodded as I stared at her, feeling like I wanted her more. I walked up to Wepauwet, rubbing my cheek against hers.
“Thank you.” Wepauwet smiled and pushed her forehead against mine, sighing contently as she rubbed against me. “Did you enjoy our dance?” Wepauwet giggled as she leaned against me.
“Of course I enjoyed our dance. I loved being the center of attention with you.” I smiled over at her and leaned my head against hers. “Did you enjoy our dance?”
“Wepauwet, dancing with you was… Everything seemed to stop around me as I danced there with you. That’s the only way to explain how it felt.” I sighed contently as I leaned against her, enjoying how her soft fur melded with mine.
“I think we should get ready for bed.” Wepauwet began walking away, leaving me there alone for a moment.
“Wepauwet?” I watched as she stopped, turning back to me. “Can I hold you tonight?” I looked down almost ashamed that I asked that. I shook my head and turned around. I heard Wepauwet walk back up to me, sitting next to me.
“Do you want to hold me tonight or do you want to stay at my feet again?” I stared back to have her giggle. “You were licking them when I woke up.”
“I’m sorry. Your paws smell amazing, I couldn’t resist.” Wepauwet laughed as she leaned against me.
“You can hold me if you want.” I smiled over at her, leaning my head against hers. Wepauwet teased me as she walked away, brushing my nose with her tail. I followed her eagerly into one of the many rooms inside, curling up on a bed. I lay behind her, wrapping my paws around her. Her warm body against my belly was comforting. I doubt she knew it, but Wepauwet was the first girl I’ve ever held or slept with. I pushed my nose into her ear, enjoying her scent. Wepauwet giggled and turned her head to stare back at me. “Do I smell good?”
“You smell perfect.” I rubbed my cheek against hers and sighed contently. “Have I told you how amazing and alpha you are?” Wepauwet giggled as she rubbed our cheeks together.
“You’re the only beta I’ve ever had, but you’re the best.” My heart seemed to stop when she called me a beta. “Edward… I’m glad we’re traveling together.” I smiled down at her, resting my head on hers gently.
“Goodnight my beautiful alpha.” Wepauwet giggled at my response.
“Goodnight my perfect beta.” I sighed contently, holding Wepauwet a little closer. I drifted to sleep, enjoying her scent as I dozed off.
I slowly woke up to find Wepauwet facing me. She had her paws around me, squeezing me as I held her. I pushed our foreheads together and watched her sleep. Wepauwet looked beautiful asleep, twitching her ears every few minutes in a cute way. Wepauwet woke up a half hour later, smiling at me. “Did you sleep well?” I asked as she smiled at me.
“I haven’t slept that well before,” Wepauwet answered. I smiled back at her, pushing our foreheads together. “You?”
“I’m a little sad the night is over,” I whispered. “We need to get ready to go.” I let go of Wepauwet, standing up slowly. I walked outside and sat down, staring at the rising sun. I thought about yesterday and how perfect it was with Wepauwet. Wepauwet walked up behind me, smiling at me. “Ready?” Wepauwet nodded, leading me to the road where we waited for the truck. The truck appeared minutes later, parking down the road. Wepauwet and I rushed up to the truck, hiding in the trailer. We watched as the truck began driving away. We spent the next few hours talking and planning on what to do. We jumped off at the exit, rushing to the large willow tree. We waited for almost an hour before a sparrow flew up to us.
“What’s the password?” the sparrow called.
“Phillip,” Wepauwet and I said in unison.
“Alright, follow me,” the sparrow replied. He began flying away, causing us to chase him down. The sparrow led us around a small city to one of the large roads with flying beasts. Wepauwet and I gazed out at the numerous planes in awe, watching them take off and land. “You need to get in the fourth one on the right. It’s leaving for Cairo in an hour, so you’ll be there when you wake up.”
“Thank you,” I called as I rushed towards the flying beast. I carefully snuck inside, hiding from the humans. I looked back to find that Wepauwet wasn’t there. I returned outside to find her staring at the plane. “What’s wrong?”
“I’ve never been on a plane…” Wepauwet answered.
“I’ve never slept with a female until I was with you,” I replied. “Just trust me.” Wepauwet smiled up at me as she climbed into the plane. We explored the plane looking for a place to hide. Wepauwet found a small cabinet that we could hide in. I squeezed into the back, letting Wepauwet get the closer side to the door. We held onto each other, trying to fall asleep before the plane took off.
We awoke to find the plane wasn’t moving. Wepauwet peeked out of the cabinet to find the plane was empty. She rushed out, letting me stretch as I exited the cabinet. I led her off the plane to emerge to a familiar landscape. It was the same airfield that I left from. I led Wepauwet across the airfield into the desert, following the scent of my trail. When I picked up my scent I began slowing down to a walk. “Why are you slowing down?” Wepauwet asked. “We can make it there today.” I stopped and turned to Wepauwet.
“I want to spend one more night with you before we get there,” I answered. “I need to prepare for what to expect.”
“I would like that,” Wepauwet said as she smiled. I smiled back at her, leading her through the desert. We stopped at night, knowing the others were only a few hours away. I turned towards Wepauwet, pushing my forehead against hers. Wepauwet giggled as she rubbed her cheek against mine. “Why are you so affectionate tonight?”
“I want to enjoy my last night with you,” I answered. Wepauwet smiled as she lay down at my feet. I lay down next to her, wrapping my paws around her. We looked up at the moon, enjoying it together as we held each other. “Tomorrow everything is going to change…”
“Just enjoy your time here first.” I smiled at Wepauwet, kissing her forehead before I began drifting off to sleep.
I woke up early, kissing Wepauwet before I stood up. I gazed out at the horizon, enjoying the cool morning breeze. I watched as the sun rose, waking Wepauwet. We went out and ate from a carcass we found before running out towards the others. When the cave was in sight on the horizon I began thinking about what I’m going to do. I rushed up to the cave, looking out at the others to have Luis burst out and tackle me. “Edward!” Luis boomed as he smiled down at me. “Where have you been? And who is this beauty you brought with you.”
“It’s Wepauwet,” I called as I pushed Luis off of me. “Now where’s Anubis?” I looked around the others to find that she wasn’t there. “Where is she?”
“She was taken,” Luis answered as he sat down. “She was grabbed by a hairless ape.” I gasped and turned to Wepauwet who stared back.
“I’m going to go get her,” I said as I walked over to Wepauwet.
“Me too,” Wepauwet replied.
“No,” I called, staring back into Wepauwet’s eyes. “This is something I need to do alone.” Wepauwet stared back blankly for a moment before nodding. I began running off towards the air field at full speed, knowing that she was going to be put on a plane. I ran the entire day, not stopping at all. I made it to the airfield at night, searching around frantically for Anubis. I stayed up all night, watching the trucks come and go, delivering crates and things. I found Anubis being delivered in a cage in the morning. I watched as the same man who captured me got ready to inject her with that sleeping drug. I charged at the man, tackling him before he could inject Anubis. I watched as the needle ended up in his arm, causing him to fall asleep. I chuckled as I walked up to the cage, smiling at Anubis.
“Oh Edward!” Anubis cried, her voice a little more powerful than Wepauwet’s. “You’re the only one who came for me.”
“I can’t let you end up at a reserve like I was,” I answered as I bit the clamp on the cage. Anubis jumped out and smiled back at me.
“Thank you,” Anubis said as I jumped down next to her.
“Let’s just get you back to the others,” I replied. I began leading her back into the desert towards the others.
“I missed you,” Anubis called as we ran. I stopped and looked over at her, trying to feel happy, but I couldn’t. I only wanted Wepauwet. “Let’s get back, I need to talk to the others.” I nodded, beginning to lead us back across the desert. We took a few breaks, walking instead of running. We made it back a little past nightfall. Anubis rushed in and stopped when she saw Wepauwet. “June?”
“June?” Wepauwet asked, shocked and confused. I sat down and watched this scene unfold. “My name is Wepauwet.”
“No it’s not,” Anubis replied. “You’re my sister June. You disappeared when I was younger.” Anubis smiled at Wepauwet and sighed contently. “It’s so good seeing you again. Now everyone pay attention.” I watched as the others gathered around Anubis, listening intently. “June is welcome back here as an alpha.” The others began to cheer at Anubis‟ first announcement. “Now I want you all to know that I’m picking my mate.” Anubis walked up to me and smiled. “You’re the only one to come for me. Without you I don’t know where I’d be. You even came back after you ran away. I want you to be my mate. I love you Edward.” I thought I would be happy hearing that, but I wasn’t. I glanced over at Wepauwet who was smiling back at me.
I shook my head, walking by Anubis towards Wepauwet. “I’m sorry Anubis,” I began. “I don’t want you.” I smiled at Wepauwet pushing my forehead against hers. “I want to spend my life with Wepauwet as her beta.” Wepauwet smiled and rubbed her cheek against mine. “I love you Wepauwet.”
“You really want that?” Wepauwet asked as she stared into my eyes.
“I want nothing more than to go back to the reserve with you,” I whispered. “Will you take me as your mate?” Wepauwet giggled as she licked my nose.
“Of course,” Wepauwet answered as she rest her head on my shoulder. “Let’s go home in the morning.” I smiled at her and rubbed my body against hers. My stomach gently growled from two days without eating, almost echoing inside the cave, making Wepauwet giggle as she led me out of the cave.. I smiled at her as she walked around the cave, bringing me back a meaty thigh from their meal earlier. I ate it hastily, enjoying the meal while it lasted. “Did you know she was my sister?” I sighed and nodded.
“I knew she was when you told me about the omega you liked,” I replied. I walked around her, drawing a picture in the sand with my claws. I drew a picture of two jackals watching their group of kids playing. “It was me.” Wepauwet stared down at the picture and smiled back at me.
“No wonder I liked you,” Wepauwet called as she tackled me, licking my face happily. I smiled up at her and kissed her nose. “So you picked me over my sister.” I smiled up at her and nodded happily.
“I realized it that night we danced,” I answered. “I just felt perfect being with you. You never treated me bad.” I kissed her cheek and pulled her down on top of me. Wepauwet giggled and rubbed her cheek against mine.
“It’s good to see you found your mate dude,” Luis said as he approached us. I smiled over at Luis who looked back as another jackal walked up to him. “It’s good seeing you with someone. So are you going to leave tomorrow?”
“Yeah,” I replied.
“We need to get back home to repopulate,” Wepauwet answered as she smiled down at me. “And I can’t wait to start.” I smiled up at her and licked her nose.
“Silva and I wish you well Edward,” Luis called as he rubbed against his mate. “We’re going to miss you. Just don’t forget about us.”
“I promise to name our first son after you,” I said as Wepauwet let me up. I smiled at Luis for a moment before walking away with Wepauwet. Wepauwet curled up outside the cave, motioning for me to hold her. I wrapped my paws around her, kissing her ears. I held her closely, drifting to sleep as I enjoyed her scent, knowing that my life was now complete.
